Is there really anything that smells better than a cinnamon bun? I am obsessed. I bake store bought cinnamon buns all the time but I had never actually tried making cinnamon buns myself. Bad food blogger! I have to say, these babies are labor intensive, but man are they worth it.
Cinnamon rolls are definitely a special breakfast. They take time and patience. I started my buns on Saturday so they would be ready to go for an ooey gooey surprise for my boys for Sunday morning. My house smelled like heaven!
These buns are a yeast dough so you will want to start by proofing your yeast. Start by warming one cup of milk on the stove. Allow the milk to warm but not boil. Pour the milk into a bowl and add one packet of yeast. You should see the yeast start to foam. Then you are ready to start your buns!!
In a separate mixing bowl, add sugar, room temperature butter, salt, eggs, and flour, mix well.
Pour the milk/yeast mixture in the mixing bowl slowly.
A dough hook and standing mixer are the best option for mixing this dough.
Mix until all ingredients are incorporated.
Place dough into an separate oiled bowl, cover and let rise in a warm place until the dough has doubled in size. At room temperature this should take about an hour.
Once the dough has finished rising pour it out on a floured surface. Roll the dough out until it is about 1/4 inch thick.
Now comes the cinnamon filling!!!!!!
Smother the dough with room temperature butter.
Combine brown sugar and cinnamon in a bowl and spread over butter.
Starting at the edge begin to roll the dough.
Cut the dough into 1 inch slices and add to a greased 9×13 baking pan.
Cover the baking pan with plastic wrap and place in fridge to rise overnight.
Now let’s start that frosting….
Combine butter, powdered sugar, cream cheese, vanilla and salt and mix until you have an icing consistency.
Do everything in your power not to eat this all before you are ready to bake the cinnamon buns.
When your buns have properly risen overnight preheat oven to 350 and bake for about 20 minutes. Your whole house will smell divine.
Once the rolls have cooled smother them in icing and then EAT THEM ALL!
