Can we all just take a moment and look at that photo? Can’t you just smell it? We have already established that FALL IS MY FAVORITE! From the color changing leaves to the pumpkin flavored everything. I will take it!
That said, I do think that apple doesn’t get all the fall glory that it should. This apple crumble recipe is the epitome of this season. Warm spices envelope the apples and make your house smell delicious! I suggest serving this crumble warm with a scoop of ice cream or, if you dare, a little bit of brandy poured over the top. 🙂
Start by peeling 5 pounds of apples. Any red apple will work but I find honeycrisp to be the best option. Cut the apples into equal chunks and place in a large bowl.
Zest and juice one lemon and add to the apples.
Juice a half of an orange and add to apples. Stir.
Add 3/4 cup granulated sugar, 3 tsp cinnamon and 1.5 tsp nutmeg to the apples. Stir again until all of the spices are fully incorporated.
Dice 2 sticks of cold butter and add them to a mixing bowl.
Add 1.5 cups of flour, 1 cup granulated sugar, 1 cup brown sugar, 1.5 cups oats to the bowl and mix on low speed until all ingredients are mixed and crumbly.
Pour your apples into a buttered 9X12 casserole dish and then distribute the crumble topping evenly over the top.
Cook for one hour, allow to cool just slightly so that the juices redistribute and then spoon this dessert up with a spoonful of vanilla ice cream.
